Cadillac . How to Inspect Shock AbsorbersShock absorbers and struts (coil springs and shock absorbers joined together in a single unit) are safety devices often neglected that aid in keeping your tires in contact with the road at all times. Springs cushion a vehicle's ride, but without shock absorbers to dampen the springs' compression and expansion, a vehicle would keep bouncing after riding over rough streets or sinking into potholes. Because shock absorbers are in constant contact with road debris and suffer the effects of varying weather conditions, both exterior and interior damage can cause shock absorber failure. Inspecting shock absorbers at the manufacturer's recommended intervals is an important task in keeping your vehicle safe and under control. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Vehicle jack Lug nut wrench Jack stands Droplight Clean rags Step by Step : 1 Road test the vehicle for signs of shock absorber malfunction. Check for excessive bouncing after hitting bumps--this signals that the shock absorbers are not damping (restricting) the action of the springs. Substandard braking and poor handling in turns may be an indication that the tires are not making proper contact with the road. If the vehicle's front end dips when braking, or the vehicle "squats" during acceleration, the shock absorbers may not be functioning properly upon compression. 2 Park the vehicle and shut off its engine. Rock all four corners of the vehicle separately by pressing down on the ends of the bumpers. Rock the vehicle at each spot several times and then release it. Observe how many times the vehicle bounces on its own. If it bounces more than two times before returning to its original position, the shock absorber is not damping the spring action properly and may require replacement. 3 Inspect tires for uneven wear and "cupping" (shallow patches of tread that look as if they have been carved out). This is an indication that the vehicle has been bouncing excessively and that patches of tread have been scuffed away as they hit the pavement. 4 Measure the distance between the top of each tire and the center of the outer wheel well edge. If one or more measurements are shorter than the others, the spring may be broken at that location. Since springs and shock absorbers work in conjunction with each other, make sure to also look at the springs when you are checking the shock absorbers. 5 Release the initial tension, or "crack" the lug nuts (just enough until they turn easily) on each wheel before you raise that corner of the vehicle. Lift the vehicle one wheel at a time, safely supporting the chassis on jack stands. Remove the lug nuts and wheel and set them aside. 6 Visually inspect the spring first, using your droplight to illuminate its full circumference. Wipe any oil or dirt from the spring. Check for cracks and scoring, and any other signs of wear. If any spring requires replacement be sure to replace them in pairs, either in the front or in the back. 7 Visually inspect the shock absorber next. Check the rod extending from the top of the shock absorber to make sure it is not bent or broken. Also check the rod for pitting or scoring, which can eventually damage the shock absorber's oil seal. Check the dust shield at the top of the shock absorber for dents and cracks that could lead to rod damage. Check for loose or missing bushings, and loose or broken mounts. Also check for oil leaks. Wipe any oil and dirt from the shock absorber, and check for cracks and oil seeping from the upper seal. The presence of oil is not always a sign that the shock absorber is leaking. The oil may have splashed onto the shock absorber from another part of the vehicle. Be sure to check the shock absorber thoroughly before deciding to replace it. Check all four springs and shock absorbers thoroughly, in the same manner. Do not rush through the job. Being thorough will ensure the safety of the vehicle and of its passengers. 8 Repair or replace any damaged or worn springs and shock absorbers. Tips & Warnings Consult a qualified mechanic if you cannot decide whether a shock absorber is worn enough to replace. Often, worn shock absorbers will still function, but not as well as they should. A mechanic will probably recommend replacement. When evaluating his recommendation, always consider safety before cost. Never crawl under a lifted vehicle unless it is properly secured on jack stands. Hydraulic or manual jacks can fail, causing injury or death. Always have a qualified mechanic perform any repairs that you are not capable of performing yourself.
Cadillac . How to Select Shock AbsorbersAnyone with a car appreciates a smooth ride, but when the shock absorbers for your truck or car age, you need to replace them with absorbers capable of providing you with the same smooth ride. Because of the technical or mechanical aspects involved, the task of selecting a shock absorber might seem daunting. However, if you follow a few guidelines, you'll find a shock absorber that matches your automobile's needs. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Instructions Step by Step : 1 Decide if you need fixed or adjustable shocks. Fixed shocks provide the same amount of support from one load to the next. Adjustable shocks allow the driver to change the support the absorber provides by adjusting a dial. The dial dictates how much fluid fills the shock. Higher fluid levels allows the shock absorbers to provide solid support for heavier loads. Lower fluid levels allows the shock absorbers to provide softer support for lighter loads. 2 Determine what type of load you need to carry. For instance, shock absorbers support not only heavy loads, but also ones that shift and jostle. A shock absorber must handle the weight of the load but also the number constant vibrations the load produces. If you carry heavy loads over rough ground, consider adjustable shock absorbers. For light to moderate loads over smooth terrain, consider fixed shocks. 3 Make sure the shocks meet your budget. Adjustable shocks are usually slightly more expensive than fixed shocks. 4 Compare warranties. Some shock absorbers have three- or five-year warranties. Other shock absorbers have lifetime warranties. 5 Examine the "orifice" design. The orifice acts as the control valve for fluid. The fluid increases or decreases pressure within the shock, which releases or stiffens the shock. Orifices come in slits, tiny holes, or large adjustable circular holes. Slit orifices do not allow for maximum control and release of fluid, so the shock provides minimal support. Orifices consisting of small holes allow for greater degree of fluid release. Orifices with adjustable circular holes allow for the maximum amount of fluid release and provide the most solid support. 6 Examine the shock absorber's working temperature range. Shock absorbers operate best in mild environments, but some shock absorbers for colder environments use a thinner viscosity fluid. Shock absorbers designed for hot environments use a thicker fluid. 7 Compare casing to stroke length. For instance, the stroke length is the length of the movable shaft within the shock absorber casing. For maximum support, the shock absorber casing should measure 50 to 60 percent of the stroke length. Convinced? Then what you need to check regularly is anything that can run out of fluid, lose air, jiggle loose, or fray after use — in other words, things like accessory belts, tire pressure, and coolant level. This chapter explains what to look for, how to look for it, and what to do if you discover that something needs to be replaced or refilled. I've provided a Maintenance Record sheet at the back of this book. Make a copy for each of your vehicles to keep track of what you check and what you replace. You'll find a Specifications Record at the back of the book as well. To avoid having to return parts that don't fit your vehicle, just make a copy of this "spec sheet" for each of your vehicles, fill in the appropriate part numbers, and take it with you to the auto supply store. Once a month, in the morning, before you've driven your car, arm yourself with a clean,'lint-free rag and the tools mentioned in this chapter and open the hood of your vehicle. (If you've never done that, see "How to Open the Hood" in Chapter 1.) Then check the items in the sections that follow. It may take longer the first time you do it, but after that you should be able to whip through this check in about 15 minutes. If the coolant, oil, transmission, brake, or power-steering fluid level is very low, fill it to the proper level and check it again in a couple of days. If it's low again, ask a mechanic to find out why you're losing fluid and correct the problem. .Chapter 3: Preventive Maintenance: A Monthly Under-the-Hood Check C 7 Cadillac .
